Girls in Tech, a global organization focused on girls and women passionate about technology, formed a Phoenix chapter just this March. They’re officially opening on June 15 with a free launch event, which includes a screening of the film, “She Started It.”
GIT was founded in 2007 to create a support framework that would help women advance their STEM careers. Its 60-plus chapters host pitch nights, fundraisers, networking opportunities, hackathons, and other events that allow girls and women to build upon their tech knowledge and make valuable connections. Today, GIT supports innovative women both in STEM fields and in various stages of starting a business.
This March, GIT expanded to Phoenix with a new chapter led by Managing Directors Rebecca Clyde (of Ideas Collide and Botco.ai) and Melissa Drake (of Pan American Charter School). GIT’s new chapter is kicking off its grand opening with a special event at the Arizona Science Center in downtown Phoenix. Tech lovers of all ages and levels of experience are welcome. GIT will provide refreshments and offer a free screening of the film, “She Started It,” which follows five women as they pitch VCs, build teams, and bring products to market. The film explores “the cultural roots of female underrepresentation in entrepreneurship,” as well as the roadblocks women face as they start and expand their businesses. GIT will also raffle off fun prizes at the event.
The goal of the event is to show tomorrow’s workforce what’s possible in the world of science, technology, engineering, and math, and prove that women have exciting and rewarding career opportunities in all four areas. “We want to create a culture of diversity in the Metro Phoenix technology scene,” says Carine Dieudé, who holds the mentorship committee chair at GIT’s Phoenix chapter. With the way the tech industry has found its home in Phoenix as of late, the new chapter—and its upcoming launch event—couldn’t have better timing.
GIT’s Phoenix launch event will take place the evening of Thursday, June 15 at the Irene P. Flinn Theater in the Arizona Science Center. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP online prior to the event.
