Ride-sharing company and Uber rival Lyft announced earlier this month that the company will begin testing a $200 per month subscription service in Phoenix.
A select group of high-frequency users will be invited to take part in the new service, with the possibility of subscriptions being offered to all users if this test run goes well. Selected users who are interested will join a waitlist and once a spot opens up they will be able to purchase the Lyft Pass. The Pass costs $200 per month and offers $15 off 30 rides, which KTAR.com says would come to a value of $450.
The Phoenix Business Journal explains that this subscription model test is a way for the company to explore the possibility of life without a car in the Phoenix area, known for its sprawl and relatively limited public transportation. While most Phoenicians consider it a requirement to own a car to live and work in the area, a program like Lyft Pass may fill in the gaps of public transit and offer a viable alternative.
